La Traviata is the story of the tragic love between the demimondaine Violetta and the younger, passionate Alfredo Germont. Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class society, Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to ruin his family. His father appeals to Violetta to give up Alfredo for the sake of his family. Knowing that she is ill and she can never marry Alfredo, she relinquishs her one chance of happiness and leaves him in an ultimate act of self-sacrifice.
